7. attention to the service of the Government and use his utmost exertions to promote the interest of the Government and shall not directly or indirectly engage in any other service, business, employment, or undertaking or speculation whatsoever.
6. The Government shall pay to the person engaged a Salary of Seven hundred and twenty dollars ($720) per annum payable in equal monthly instalments. The salary of the person engaged shall commence on the day on which he shall arrive in Hong Kong and shall continue until the day of the expiration or sooner determination of his term of service, but half salary will be allowed during the voyage out.
8. The Government shall provide the person engaged with a free second-class passage to Hong Kong and shall pay his Railway fare to the Port of embarkation. If the person engaged shall at any time neglect or refuse or from any cause become or be unable to perform, or comply with all or any of the Articles of this Agreement or all or any of the duties required of him or all or any of the orders or directions of the Government or their representative or representatives, or shall in any manner misconduct himself, or shall correspond verbally or otherwise directly or indirectly with any person or about the affairs of the Government, or shall publish directly or indirectly any document or information of any kind whatever affecting the Government, it shall be lawful for the Government or their representative or representatives to declare this Agreement at an end, and thereupon the term of service of the person engaged shall cease, and this Agreement shall not have any further prospective operation, but without prejudice to the enforcement of existing claims.
10. It shall be lawful for the Government without prejudice to its right of immediate discharge under the preceding condition to determine the engagement of the person engaged at any time on giving him six calendar months' previous notice in writing expiring at any time, or the Government may, if it shall so desire, immediately determine this Agreement at any time on payment to the person engaged of a sum equal to three months' salary in lieu of notice, but if the person engaged shall terminate his engagement within the said period of Three years for any cause (illness excepted, not caused by his own misconduct), he shall refund to the Government or to the Crown Agents for the Colonies the amount paid for his passage to the Colony.
If the person engaged shall duly perform this Agreement for the whole of its term, or shall be sooner discharged by the Government on notice aforesaid or on payment in lieu of notice as aforesaid, or if by reason of ill-health not caused by his own impropriety of conduct, he shall under the Certificate of a Medical Officer appointed for that purpose by the Government be discharged from or compelled to give up his engagement with the Government, and provided he shall in any of the events stated in this Article be desirous of returning to England, the Government shall, on request made to it within one calendar month after the expiration or sooner determination of the said term of service, provide him with a free second-class passage home, including Railway fare to destination.
12. Upon the termination of the period of three years, if the conduct of the person engaged has been satisfactory and it is mutually desired, he shall be placed on the Permanent Establishment of the Colony and shall become entitled to the privileges of the service as regards leave of absence, pension, etc.; but in...
